Map Generators for Hinterlands, Villages and Hamlets

Map tools are useful for civilisation outside of the cities. So here's a look at tools for all kinds of hinterlands adventures.

Starting Points

Hinterlands covers settled lands outside of the cities, so hamlets and villages plus smaller market towns and roads, or areas grazed by herd of livestock overseen by herders.

There might also be ruins or part of a hex crawl or other adventure.

Regular Hinterlands Maps

The first dedicated village map generators is the Village Generator by Watabou which includes fields and outlying buildings.

The Medieval Village Map Generator at Kassoon has a different style showing every tree and is supplemented by the Hamlet Map Generator for really small settlements. And finally the House Map Generator for individual buildings. They include extra features for supporters.

Then there is Fantasy Town Generator, which can generate hamlets, villages and towns with options for coasts, rivers, walls and lifestyle level.

Other Hinterlands Maps

Your best bet for a hinterlands area map is Azgaar with Azgaar's Fantasy Map Generator. Playing around with filters and modes in the options section, looking especially at roads and settlement sizes.

Another option for settlements is Donjon's Fantasy Town Generator, which can make Villages, Thorps and Hamlets with accompanying details.

For something different Dave's Mapper can make tile-based village maps.

PDF Maps

Village Modular Map-Tiles from Black Scrolls Games is a collection of 70 double-sided tiles for fields, cottages and other village features.
Fishwife Games has Woodrum's Curious Collection of Village Map Details, a d100 table of fleshed out localities in a village.
At the edge of the hinterlands, you can use Sidequest Decks: Frontier Town Quests from Inkwell Ideas, a deck of 72 cards with adventure ideas and maps.
Atelier Clandestin has a Sandbox Generator with hex maps and tables for filling them with settlements, npcs, dungeons and other pieces of interest.
