Q&A with Azgaar of Azgaar's Fantasy Map Generator
How did you get into creating map generators?
I had been worked on my Medieval Dynasty Simulator and needed a map capable to have at least 500 settlements within 7 cultural regions. I was not able to find a ready-to-use solution and decided to create my own procedural generator based on Amit's and Martin's ideas.
When it was generally ready, I've found Here Dragons Abound and had to continue the work as my maps seemed too primitive. Then I've started my dev blog and got some audience.
What generators are you most proud of creating and why?
I've made only one working generator. I can also consider my Medieval Dynasty Simulator as a generator, but it's just on a pre-alpha stage.
What is the most fun thing about creating generators?
I like that people find my work cool and useful. And I do like to see the project progressing. It would be nice to get it completed one day (currently it's on beta).
What are the most painful lessons you've learnt from creating generators?
I had to re-create things for multiple times and still not quite happy with them. But it's not unique, every developer have to do the same.
How do you use generators yourself?
I use them mostly to get new ideas for my generator.
What are your next big projects (generators or otherwise) that you can talk about?
I don't really have any plans of finishing the map generator until the end of the next year. After that I may get back to the Medieval Dynasty Simulator.
