Gamebook Diaries: Testing the Briar

Duncan Thomson

So my first gamebook is ready to test!

A Long Way Done

The Briar is a project started in September 2024, and has been the subject of many design diaries. Looking at combat options, the character, easy & hard mode, codes/tickboxes, and random tables.

It's an open-world gamebook where you're lost in the forest. There are companions, communities, fights, resting and different ways to play it!

Some Way to Go

The first full version is ready to test, starting with a few people I'll ask, and a play-by-post on the Rand Roll Discord. I'll be looking for feedback on the mechanics, feel and ease of play.

But...it won't be published until the second book (Citadel of Oak and Rose) is ready. Or at least well on the way. The first draft of Citadel has been done so it's on the move!

Really I need to see how my mechanics and ideas work with real readers! And then make adjustments from the feedback.

Finishing Up

In the meantime I'll be writing up my first gamebook to actually publish, the Isle of Sorcery!
