Rolling Solo Season 4 will be Dungeons

Duncan Thomson

The next season of the Rolling Solo Actual Plays will be...Dungeoneering.

A Season of Dungeons

Season 3 of Rolling Solo has run for a year, with great games such as Dolmenwood, Mythic Bastionland and Starforged. Some of my best solo experiences.

After a short break (and one more Stonehell write-up), Rolling Solo will be back with Season 4, choosing Dungeons.

I've found solo dungeons quite frustrating in the past. They hold a strange primal fascination, of seeking the treasure in the depths, facing the fear of deep caves and horrors that lurk in the darkness.

I've often found randomly generated dungeons mixed, and rarely wanted to repeat the experience. 2d6 Dungeon was one of the best solo plays I've done for dungeons, but got a bit repetitive. Stonehell Solo with OSE with multiple parties has been amazing, but is a major timesink and undertaking. Warlock! at Firetop Mountain was also fun, playing the Warlock! rpg and using random tables to remake an old gamebook classic dungeon.

So I want to explore what's out there for solo dungeoneering, some of the "best" games and a few alternate options and some cobbled together experiments.

Among my themes to explore are Megadungeons, Factions in solo dungeons, Dungeon Gamebooks, Random Adventures and Fungi (that's just a personal current interest).

Planned Games

  • Delve by Anna Blackwell - Map drawing dwarf controlling solo game.
  • OSE and Return to Keep on the Borderlands - In Sept, to mark my 5 year solo rpg anniversary.
  • 5E Solo with Chaos Engine D&D and probably some of my random tables.
  • Dolmenwood in Fungal Depths
  • The journalling solo rpg where you're a dungeon...
  • Ker-Nethalas from Black Oath
  • Colostle
  • Finishing off Stonehell with OSE
  • Shadowdark tackling a megadungeon, possibly Caverns of Thracia

Other Possibilities

Possible games include...

  • Ironsworn Delve
  • Triple-0 expanded (Cezar C)
  • A Dungeoneering Gamebook such as Deathtrap Dungeon
  • Kal-Arath
  • Gradient Descent

Finishing Up

Any suggestions welcome!
